Nowadays, a lot of books are a compilation of recycled ideas that are laid out in the same way and format, book after book, just like a Chinese factory. There are countless reasons why that’s the case but let’s explore the 8 main reasons you MUST read the classics first.
1. Good Books take time to write
It might take, months, years, and maybe even decades to write elite-level books.
Nowadays, the world is looking for instant solutions, quick fixes, and quick results.
Books are like whiskey, the older it was aged the better.
2. Deep thinkers are a rare breed
Thinking deeply is not necessary anymore. Nowadays, you have a supercomputer in your pocket, gadgets, and technology to help you think.
The human mind goes to the point of least resistance and it shows in many books.
3. Good books are the result of years of original thinking
Most writers today don’t sit on an idea for more than a few weeks or months. They just execute.
This results in much more mediocrity over novelty in newer books.
4. Human attention span is at an all-time low
To keep people hooked on a book, the author cannot go into the same depth as the classic artworks. They resort to fast thrillers or cliffhangers to keep you rushing through it. This causes a huge drop in quality as opposed to the intricacies presented in the old masterpieces. Read this article to develop a better reading system.
5. Everyone can afford to write a book
Think about it, would most authors that live today write a book 100, or 200 years ago? Would they take the risk to fail miserably in their pursuit?
A real writer is someone that HAS to write, no matter the consequences.
6. The writing wasn’t widespread
To write a book required you actually… knew how to write. I know this is probably SHOCKING to hear.
But back then, only the most educated learned to write.
Those coming up to write books were the most elite minds at that time
7. The stakes were higher
In order to publish a book, you had to go through more tests and editing reviews before a
the publisher decided to publish your book…
Only the rich had the ability to publish a book without worrying about expenses.
Nowadays it’s as cheap as ever to publish a book, even without the intention to profit.
Today, ANYONE can publish a book.
8. They haven’t stood the test of time
A book can only become a classic if it survived the test of time, which we will only know in
the future.
Rare are the books that are declared classic in their era.
